Yummy Things I Ate This Summer
Did summer 2018 even happen? I feel like it might not have. But some how I ended up with all these amazing food pics on my phone, and I’m just like – so where did those come from? It’s one of those mysteries I feel like we’ll just never solve. Like the Rosswell incident.
I am seriously *obsessed* with these doughnuts from L&M Bakery. And I’m not even a doughnut person! (Seriously, y’all, I only go to Dunkin’ for the coffee so the rebranding doesn’t phase me one bit. Unfortunately, you’ll have to drive all the way to Delran, New Jersey for these… but I’ve got a guy there who will probably put you up for the night, and might even give you a beer.
Little Pearl, Pineapple & Pearl’s adorable little sister, is charming as can be. You’ll want a bakers dozen of these “angel eggs”, a fresh take on deviled eggs that uses meringue as the base.
Now there’s a whipped cream option for my non-dairy peeps… and it’s tasty AF! Unfortunately, I’ve found that both cans run out of air while still halfway full so they may have some troubleshooting to do. But YUM!
We’ve been to Chiko twice now for the kitchen side tasting menu and my main takeaway for you is #JustDoIt… but if I had to pick a favorite it would be this chopped brisket with furikake butter (let’s be honest – they had me at furikake butter).
Capitol Sushi is some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever had. I’ve done the omakase menu a few times, but their fatty tuna takes the cake.
I usually take a pass on Restaurant Week, but two years in a row I’ve found myself at Osteria Morini and I have to say – they do a great job. This summer my favorite dish was this chilled corn chowder with pickled onions!
While I usually find “bottomless” deals overwhelming (har har har), Ambar on Barracks Row does a nice bottomless lunch. We managed not to overeat too terribly by avoiding the bready options. This tuna tartare with squid ink butter was a favorite.
This one my buddy actually made for us using his Italian grandmother’s traditional recipe – so I can’t give you a link. Which is your loss because it was DELICIOUS! And let’s be honestly, eating straight off the table is kinda my jam.
I’d heard very mixed reviews of Salt Line, but personally had a wonderful experience. I had a simple dinner on the bar patio of a Johnny cake with honey butter, smoked whitefish salad and marinated salmon roe and a grilled cucumber and watermelon salad.
Maybe not the refreshing bite you’d think to grab after a long run, but this corn beef Reuben from Herhsel’s in Philly’s Reading Terminal Market sure hit the spot.
Pisco y Nazca recently opened in the neighborhood where I work, and offered $20 for new customers. TWIST MY ARM! A teammate and I actually split this skirt steak – easily enough for two, especially if you start with some ceviche (which you should).
You can smell these piroshky before you even see the line wrapping around this small Russian pastry shop outside Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Follow your nose and don’t let the line deter you, it’s worth it. Serving up both sweet and savory treats, Piroshky Piroshky has something for everyone. My favorites were the marzipan roll and the salmon pate.
We finally made it to Panda Gourmet! An unassuming Chinese restaurant hidden within the Days Inn on New York Ave, it’s famous for it’s authentic Sichaun cuisine. Highlights were the crunchy cucumbers and the mapo tofu.
