Paleo Bacon-Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Hazelnuts {Whole30}
It’s always nice to have an hors d’oeuvre when you have people over to your house for dinner. Something besides wine to distract them while you’re spilling and bumping into things and burning yourself in your (open format) kitchen. Obviously on Whole30 the cheese plate is out, as is hummus – my traditional fall back. Actually, in the utopian Whole30 universe, hors d’oeuvres in general are out because they frown upon snacking, and would certainly frown upon snacking just to distract people from the mess you’re making in the kitchen. So instead I’ve renamed hors d’oeuvres “meal part 1,” which is much easier to spell anyways.
You often see bacon wrapped dates stuffed with cheese, usually a goat or a blue. However, I think you’ll be pleased to find they aren’t missing anything without it. In fact, I really enjoyed the earthy taste of the hazelnuts, and the extra crunch.
And some food for thought: with the awards show circuit just around the corner, these are a classy party snack! Serve them to your guests, or if you’re going to a friend’s house I’m sure your host wouldn’t be disappointed if you showed up with these!
Paleo Bacon-Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Hazelnuts
Ingredients:
- 12 dates, pits removed
- 4 thick cut slices of bacon (with no added-sugars)
- 24-30 whole hazelnuts, unsalted
Stuff 2-3 hazelnuts in each date, where you have removed the pit. Cut each piece of bacon into three piece. Wrap each piece around one stuffed-date. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 395 degrees for 15-20 minutes, flipping once at the half-way point. You want the bacon to be crispy!
Serves 1-12, depending on love of bacon
