National Pizza Month Flashback: My Last Slice as a Single Lady
National pizza month seems like the appropriate time to fill you in on a few of the stops I’ve failed to share during my quest to try the “best” pizza joint in every state. The one I’m going to start with was almost a year ago. “A YEAR?!” you ask… “you waited A YEAR?!” Well, I think you’ll forgive me for not getting this post up as soon as I left the pizza joint. You see, it was the Food Network’s pick for Georgia, Vinnie Van Go Go in Savannah, Georgia. The day before my wedding.
That’s right. The day before my wedding, one of my priorities (right up there with getting manicure/pedicures with my bridesmaids, finishing up my vows, and making it to the rehearsal) was trying the “best” pizza in Georgia.
I’m afraid my thoughts on this pizza might be a bit skewed. My head was not in the game. I was less than 36 hours from walking town the aisle toward the love of my life. I was eating said pizza surrounded by a great big group of friends and family, in a decidedly celebratory mood. And my pizza was paired with a Sweetwater Blue.
The pizza parlor itself is rather small. You can expect a bit of a wait, especially if you have a large group… say, 8 or maybe 9… oh wait, their plane arrived? That makes 12! Luckily, the beautiful park outside and the city’s open container policy (one of the many things I love about Savannah) gave us the option to get our slices to go.
You can order your pizza by the slice, and the toppings are entirely customizable. Once you order, you can watch through the window as the chef hand spins the giant crust.
The slices themselves are quite large, and one is quite enough (particularly if you have to squeeze into a very tight corset dress the next day. I went with the “yuppie” toppings: banana peppers, feta, artichokes, and spicy Italian sausage.
I think this one was Courtney’s. Except that I see sun dried tomatoes. Maybe that one was mine too? I wouldn’t put it past me.
Overall, as I recall, the pizza was quite good… the atmosphere and the company better yet. And this, ladies and gentlemen? This is me enjoying my very last slice as a single woman.
