March in Review
March was a good month. For me, not my blog. Things have really come together in a very short time and I feel really lucky for that. I’m finally using my brain at work, Courtney found a chemical engineering job right outside D.C. and it’s just pretty amazing to think that after a nearly four-year long distance relationship, I can count our weekends apart on my fingers… without even using my thumbs! Our biggest challenge now is finding a place that will accept our rental application, pit bull and all. I can handle that.
Anyways, since it’s been awhile since I’ve posted I’ll do a little “month in review.”
Best “Cheap Eat”:
Taco Impala
My review comes too late for anyone to enjoy this hidden gem- the pop-up restaurant that was open in what’s usually the Philadelphia Water Ice Factory (1204 H St.) is already closed. But maybe next year! For $3 a pop you can have a beef, pork or bean taco with farmer’s market fresh ingredients and tortillas made from scratch. I had a pork and a steak, and while I wouldn’t have minded if each had more of said fresh ingredients (two left me still slightly unsatisfied) the meat was quality. Also, it was open seven days a week, and late night (3am) on Friday and Saturday… you can’t beat that!
Best Splurge
Restaurant Nora
My parents took me and Courtney here to celebrate my promotion and his new job. It was the first certified organic restaurant in the country, and I’d been wanting to try it since I moved to D.C. and even more since Barack took Michelle. The ambiance was as organic as the food, and in my opinion the restaurant’s best feature. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal (the calamari some of the best I’ve ever had) but my scallops with risotto were certainly nothing to complain about.
Best Brunch:
Enjoyed this one right in my own home! We made our first batch of savory ebelskivers: smoked salmon and cream cheese. I served them up with fried eggs, avocado and a fresh green salad. This was a serious winning combo.
Best Happy Hour
Zengo
Zengo in Chinatown has everything a happy hour menu needs: food options that don’t (all) involve a deep fryer and fun cocktails, all for $5 or less! Emily and I split the Vegetariano Sushi Roll (healthy) and the Thai Chicken Empanadas (delicious). The sake sangria, also a home run.
Best Dessert
I feel like I must be biased (and possibly not very humble), but my favorite dessert was also homemade! These “peanut butter banana stuffed peanut butter cookies” from Sugar Plum were quite a hit. The recipe didn’t come out how it was supposed to — the dough was far too crumbly to stuff well so most of the filling was eaten separately, by the cook, with a spoon. Something was definitely off with the recipe, but they were still quite tasty!
So there it is, your March in review! Now if I can only post again before it’s time to do ‘April in Review’…
