Fashion for Paws 2011

I may as well put it out there that I’m not really one you would consider ‘in the know.’  I’ll probably never be hip enough to do a ‘Upcoming Events’ posts…  unless you want to see the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday happy hour specials at Union Pub, and quite honestly there’s only so many artistic ways to photograph bud light buckets and baskets of tots.  So instead, you get to see the after-the-fact photos of the occasions that I do escape a one-mile radius of my house on Capitol Hill to make it to a great event.

I really should start with a little background: Saturday had no choice but to be a great day… how could it not have been when I was showered in champagne before breakfast?   Okay, so it wasn’t glamorous as it may sound.  I opened the fridge to grab a glass of water and received a cork to the chest and champagne in the face.  Punishment for not finishing the bottle, surely.  Better yet? I headed outside to move my car, only to find it had been towed, not by the city, and that I would have to call 9-1-1 and file a stolen vehicle report to find my car.    So what I’m really saying, is that the day had no choice but to go up-hill.

And up-hill it went… Saturday night was the 5th annual Fashion for Paws runway show to benefit the Washington Humane Society and it certainly served up the glamour missing from my early morning run-in in the kitchen.  I went to the event in 2009 at the Italian Embassy, but wasn’t able to make it last year, and I must say I was extremely impressed at how far the event has come!  This year’s show was at the National Building Museum.  I can’t say enough about how fabulous of a venue this is–if I had signed fewer checks I’d probably be making some calls to find out about their wedding packages!  Anyways, it was a much better space for the show and a fabulous date and a VIP table certainly didn’t hurt!

Love this mother-daughter shot!

The three-course dinner was definitely a nice touch, and probably better for my health; an empty stomach and an open bar are not a happy combo.  The entire meal was vegan and gluten-free, neither of which I am, but I’m always game to try new things.  Although I also would have been perfectly happy substituting in three of the chocolate tortes!   I’m not sure that Jana was so hot on the seitan, but several trips to the Georgetown Cupcake table later in the night more than made up for it!

F4P truly does give your typical fashion show a great twist: the models, all of whom have raised at least $3,000 (and many raised much more than that), strut down the aisle accompanied by (or sometimes carrying!) a furry companion. The runway glowed this year, surrounded by pink trees, fire hydrants, and dog bones. Definitely a great show to take in and for a very worthy cause!
