Balinese Living

Today we must give up our private villa for a $20/night home stay (albeit my attempt to extend our stay here, apparently someone else wants it…. whoulda thunk it?) That’s okay though, as much as we love our infinity pool, we’re looking forward to experiencing the daily life of a Balinese family.

We were a bit guilty that both of us ordered the “American Breakfast” yesterday, by far the largest on the menu (Fresh juice (read: milkshake), choice of egg, breakfast meat, cereal, bread, choice of pastry, fresh fruit and yoghurt) and may have spoiled out appetite for our Balinese lunch. Courtney thought the food was good. I thought it all tasted similar- like salt, oil and hot sauce- but we had a great time making it. My biggest take away, from the traditional pancake dessert, was that I want to start experimenting with crepes. The walk through the market first was interesting too- they mass produce literally hundreds of thousands of ‘offerings’ daily that can be seen all across the city, and many types of food that I certainly couldn’t identify.

The Balinese fire dance we went to last night was fabulous, and we chose salsa to dance to with dinner (there are cafes everywhere with every type of live band… or perhaps just the same three that can play every type of music. Regardless they are awesome).

The Gods don’t want us to climb Gugung Agung. Literally. It is closed for ceremony for two weeks. So instead we are heading to Tirta Ganga to do serious treks through the country side and are going to hire a guide to show us the many temples, rice patties and villages along the mountainside.

More later, we have yoga and spa treatments to attend to.
