A New Thanksgiving Tradition + This Year’s Menu

This Thanksgiving, we’re trying something new – heading to Cape Cod where we’re renting a house in Provincetown with the family. We’ll be making the pilgrimage – about 9 hours without traffic – with our two pups in tow. While I’m super excited to go to the annual lighting of the Pilgrim Monument, which celebrates the Pilgrims’ First Landing in the New World in Provincetown on November 11, 1620, and run a New England turkey trot, a small part of me is sad that this breaks a five year streak of hosting Thanksgiving suppers right here in the Messy Kitchen.

In fact, some years I’ve hosted TWO Thanksgivings, since I started doing Friendsgiving for No Kid Hungry three years ago. I loved that tradition, but decided not to do my Friendsgiving fundraiser this year for a couple reasons. First, I’ve already asked my friends and family to support my Chef Cycle ride, and like to keep the asks minimal. And second, our house is undergoing major work, which has been expensive and stressful. While we’ve not actually made enough progress that we’d not have been able to host, my hope had been that we’d be undergoing work by this time. So if you didn’t see an invite, it’s because there was no party!

So it won’t be at my home this year, but you better believe that doesn’t mean I won’t be cooking. Here’s the menu I’ve put together for our family:

Roast Turkey w/ a Yogurt Marinade  I was inspired to a try a yogurt marinade by this beautiful article in the New York Times about recently arrived refugees preparing a Thanksgiving feast for the first time. It describes a Middle Eastern take on a couple of Thanksgiving classics, including an apple pie with ma’amoul dough as the crust!

Classic Pan Gravy [Fine Cooking]

Spiced Red Wine Cranberry Sauce [Serious Eats]

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Dates and Walnuts

Maple Roast Carrots with Tahini Sauce

Classic Sausage & Sage Stuffing (w/ Italian chicken sausage)
Tahini whipped sweet potato casserole topped with walnuts and halvah (I’ll let you know how this one goes!)
Bruleed Bourbon Maple Pumpkin Pie

ohhhhhh I bet the leftover dishes will be amazing! I missed our Friendsgiving tradition, but love that I’ve still seen you lots this Fall 🙂
p.s. I didn’t give as much as I wanted for the bike ride because I thought I’d do it at Friendsgiving. Soooooo….will there be an opportunity coming up soon to donate to NKH?

Let’s keep up that trend please!

Re: Chef Cycle – you are way to generous! I will actually be fundraising again in the spring – I’m going to ride in Santa Rosa since Charlottesville was cancelled. I may actually do Corn Dog Day as a fundraiser!
