A Photo Diary of My Week at Camp
Hi Reality, it’s me Jo! I’m back from vacation. And I can’t say I missed you.
We set out Northbound Saturday morning, dogs and luggage in tow. Luckily, the further North you go, the more Dunkin’ Donuts pop up to fuel your journey. Over 10 1/2 hours and a fortune in tolls later, we arrived at my Grandmother’s house in Portsmouth. I always look forward to arriving at Grammy (not) in Spain’s, because regardless of how much traffic you hit, she always seems to have a bottle of wine open and a beautiful meal just minutes from being set on the table.
Oh, and pie for breakfast… strawberry rhubarb pie.
In the morning (before the pie, obviously), Courtney, Dad, Kippy and I set out on a six mile run to the seashore. I was nervous I’d be pretty rusty since I haven’t run since the Purple Stride 5k back about a month ago, but things went alright. I actually ended up getting a fair amount of running in while we were up there, including one (accidental) 7.5 mile trail run.
Next, we headed to visit my Great Grammy Stevens who will be 98 in October. We had a lovely visit with her and her new main squeeze Paul, a “younger” gentleman who is totally taken by Gram. “This is romance,” he said, during one of the few moments he wasn’t talking about how lucky he was. Eventually they kicked us out so that they could enjoy their lunch in peace. I must say, being asked by your relatives to leave so they can go back to their daily routine is the best way I’ve ever left a nursing home.
After more pie, we headed up to camp. Games ensued immediately. We broke in the Kubb.
Played poker with very sophisticated chips.
And waged bets on lemmings.
We had plenty of jam sessions.
And awesome family-style dinners.
I got lots of practice cooking in mass, making vegan Sloppy Joes for eleven and creamy avocado spaghetti with smoked salmon and asparagus for eight.
We fried up our meager fishing bounty.
We reunited with family.
We spent lots of time on the lake… Lila and Jim even had their first canoeing experience.
And spent even more time sunbathing on the island.
And of course went through more than a couple of these babies…
And as always, we went home too soon.
